Rick Guffey and Shawn Clouse, of The Nature Conservancy, research a restored riparian area on the south prong of Sumac Creek. This area is a great example of how working in a partnership with the landowner and community can help not only the river but the landowners as well. This area had been cleared and damaged severely by open access to cattle. Riparian vegetation had been removed and the streambanks were undercut and eroded. By working cooperatively with the landowner and partners such as National Resource Conservation Service and the Limestone Valley Resource Conservation & Development in addition to volunteers including a local 4-H group, this project was a wonderful restoration success. As demonstrated in the panorama, the cattle were restricted and the streambanks were sloped and restored to a natural setting to begin it’s own healing process.
