Water Quality and Quantity

Water quality is being evaluated monthly by samples collected by the Alliance and analyzed by Dalton Utilities. This arrangement allows a continuous monitoring effort at many locations across the watershed. No portion of the upper watershed is listed as impaired on the 303 d list maintained by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division.

Freshwater mussels are a good indicator of water quality. Research and monitoring of their populations will provide an indicator of the success of this project. Detailed information about the relationship between water quality and fresh water mussels is available from the Freshwater Mollusk Conservation Society.

Vegetation buffers have been shown to be effective at filtering sediment and other products from running off the land and into streams. Information about buffers is available from the USDA NRCS.

Clicking on any of the three areas of the map with yellow dots will take you to a detailed area map with specific Water Quality and Quantity issue locations.
