Jacks River begins at elevations near 4000’ in the high ridges of Fannin and Gilmer counties, Georgia. This cold-water stream has supported healthy populations of brown and rainbow trout for years. Fisheries biologists are concerned that fish populations have been affected by many years of drought. For six years a crew of over 20 workers from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Fish, Game, and Law Enforcement division joined the US Forest Service, US Fish and Wildlife Service and local volunteers to capture, measure, then release fish in designated sections of the river. Gary Beiser with the Georgia DNR offers a tentative assessment that, yes indeed, trout numbers are down somewhat in the sampled sections of the river due to drought. Fish health remains very good, according to analyses done by the Warm Springs staff of the USFWS. Gary notes that the low fish diversity is normal for this elevation in the Appalachians. Usually, only 4 species are found: brown trout, rainbow trout, stone rollers and banded sculpin.
