Cottonwood Campground is a horse-friendly facility and popular trailhead for riders on the Iron Mountain Trail. Adjacent to the campground is a Conasauga River pool that is home to the famous Blue Shiner. Over the past two years the Conasauga River Alliance, US Forest Service, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Auburn University, and the Boy Scouts have worked together to benefit equestrians and river fauna.

A horse-watering trough was provided in the campground, fences were built to exclude horses from the river pool, eroded streambanks were revegetated, blue shiner nesting habitat was augmented, and camping sites were improved.
