This exceptionally clear water is the Conasauga River in the Cherokee National Forest. Designated as a watchable wildlife site, it is best explored with a mask and snorkel. The river has descended to an elevation of 1100’ here and has begun to show a profound increase in biological diversity. Over 20 species of native fish can be observed in this pool which ranges up to 8 feet deep. Biological diversity increases even more as the river moves west, out of the Blue Ridge province into the Ridge and Valley province where the primary geology changes to limestone.
