Wow! Not many of these historic structures remain in the Appalachian Mountains. This fire look out tower was staffed by the US Forest Service during periods of high fire danger to alert initial attack forces. Arsonists have slowed down considerably in the last 30 years. Old timers speak of days when they looked out from the towers on Grassy Mountain, Hemp Top, and Flat Top and counted over 20 fires burning at one time. Fire detection is now done primarily by observers in fixed wing aircraft. Hike 2 miles to the tower, then venture a short way up the ladder to the cab and look out over north Georgia and into southeast Tennessee. Nighttime lights from the settlements of Dalton and Chatsworth are visible from the west and south. You can observe a large area of solitude to the north and east over 40,000 acres Cohutta and Big Frog Wildernesses no nighttime lights, and black as coal.
