clear boxSouth Fork of the Jacks River
The area on the south fork of the Jacks River is at an elevation of 2800’ in Fannin County, Ga, This is a very popular area for campers and hikers, known as Jacks River fields. This portion of the stream is in the Blue Ridge province characterized by granite geology. Typical of many streams of southern Appalachia, the headwaters of the Jacks are not highly fertile because of the granite geology. The very low biological diversity does not change appreciably for a distance of 18 miles. In that vicinity the river has reached a lower elevation and the geology transitions into the ridge and valley province where limestone affects water chemistry in the springs and tributaries.
