The Jacks River merges with the Conasauga River just below here at an elevation of 1000 feet. Biodiversity has increased within the stream as it has dropped over 2500 feet from its origins and transitions into an area of sandstone and limestone geology. Aquatic species richness has increased from 3 or 4 fish species in the headwaters, to over 40 species in this vicinity. Mussels are also found in this area where the stream gradient has decreased and sediments have accumulated to support these animals. Invertebrate functional groups include the shredders, grazers, collectors, and predators. The tree canopy does not entirely shade the river, allowing direct input of sunlight to the stream. This light allows primary energy production to occur in the stream by more diverse plant populations including phytoplankton, algae and grass.
