It's 90-miles long, helps create over two-thirds of the nation's carpets, and hosts more than 90 species of fish and 25 species of freshwater mussels. It's the Conasauga River, a locally and nationally significant resource in southeast Tennessee and northwest Georgia. The river provides recreation opportunities, irrigation water, habitat for rare fish and mussels, and water for the carpet-dyeing process.

In 1995, citizens interested in the Conasauga River watershed in Tennessee and Georgia were brought together by the Limestone Valley Resource Conservation Development Council (though a grant from the NRCS) to begin a close and coordinated look at their watershed. The citizens identified various threats to their river and developed cooperative solutions to protect this economically important and biologically diverse river system. Any interested and participating citizen is considered part of the Conasauga River Alliance. The Alliance is led by a steering committee of local opinion leaders. These leaders chair various committees that assist in prioritizing projects. The Nature Conservancy and the RC&D have served key roles in the partnership by providing staff and organizational support to the Alliance.

Three goals guide the diverse stakeholders in the Alliance:

  • Develop respect for natural resources and provide conservation education.
  • Protect private property rights.
  • Sustain and improve a clean Conasauga River.

Clear space
Over 30 different organizations and groups participate within the Alliance. Major improvements have been accomplished in the past 6 years, including the establishment of over 30 miles of vegetation buffers along streams by cooperative landowners. More detailed information is available in the 2002 Annual Report.
